A Quiet Light by Louis De Wohl was first published in 1950. To put this in a literary context, George Orwell's 1984 was published in 1949, just one year before. There are few people in the western hemisphere who haven't heard of George Orwell and yet Louis De Wohl is almost entirely unknown, even to Catholics. Since finishing A Quiet Light I’ve had the opportunity to ask two priests whether they had heard of De Wohl, and neither had. Both, I suspect, have heard of Orwell.
