Unexplained Laughter

In Unexplained Laughter, Alice Thomas Ellis deftly draws her characters. The smart and confident Lydia provides us with flashes of humor and bright observations as she endures a vacation to lick her own wounds, with the patient, kind and willing to serve Betty. The story itself feels terribly intimate, reminding me of Jane Austen's world, as most of the action, meaning, spiritual and intellectual growth for the characters comes through little things--a dinner party, a fair, sickness, and the picnic.
